Antique Keyhole Paperweight
This is a great project that may be used with new keyhole embellishments, such as the one we used from Tim Holtz. You can also use antique keyholes, skeleton keys, and other old, rustic pieces purchased from an antique shop, tag sale, or architectural salvage dealer.

Step One
To start, adhere some surdy scrap paper to your mounting board and trim any overlapping material.
If you'd like to simplify this project, you may use a piece of fabric or decorative paper as the background and move to Step Four. I've chosen to create a background that simulates painted, distressed wood by using a base of brown, acrylic paint covered with white crackle paint.

Step Two
Using a brush, apply the base paint to the side of your mounting board that's covered with the scrap paper. Allow the base paint to dry completely before moving to the next step. |
Step Three
Using the manufacturer's instructions, apply the crackle paint over the base color. Allow the base paint to dry completely before moving to the next step. |
Step Four
Once the crackle paint has dried, select the keyhole style you would like to use and place it where you'd like it to be secured. Using a pen, trace the shape of the keyhole opening and the fastener holes. Fill-in the keyhole area with a black marker. |
Step Five
Pierce the mounting board in the position of the fastener holes before securing the keyhole with fasteners. Use a small amount of glue, making sure the glue will not seep into the black area for the keyhole opening. Allow the glue to dry completely before moving to the next step. |

Step Six
Place the decorative side of the mounting board into the recessed area on the bottom of the paperweight and apply the bottom pad to finish.

The finished paperweight will be a welcome accessory to your desk at home or work. |
