Mom's Broken Brooch Paperweight

I'm sure most of us have a broken piece of costume jewelry we haven't parted with because it's just to pretty to throw away.  This project will show you how to turn a piece of costume jewelry into a jeweled paperweight that's so easy to create, you'll want to make extras to give as gifts.

If you can't find just the right piece of jewelry at home, keep an eye out for pieces at antique shops, tag sales, even the clearance table at Macy's.  You're sure to find something that catches your eye.

This paperweight was created with a reproduction brooch using decorative scrapbooking paper for the background.  For a rich, elegant look, you may want to consider using a velvet background for your project.

Supplies

Decorative Paper Background
The Paper Company, Metallic Cover (Kiwi)

Brooch

Wire Cutters

Hot Melt Glue

Scissors

Step One

Adhere the adhesive side of the mounting board to the area of decorative paper or fabric you'd like to display in your paperweight.

We used a sheet of Metallic Cover (Kiwi) from The Paper Company (10205-041) which really compliments the brooch's green stones.

Step Two

Using a pair of scissors, trim any paper overlapping the mounting board.  The mounting board will act as an excellent cutting guide for your scissors.

Step Three

Remove the pin from the back of your brooch using a pair of wire cutters.  In some instances, the pin may come loose by moving it back and fourth to break the solder.

Step Four

Carefully apply hot melt glue to the back of the brooch, avoiding any pierced areas of the design where the glue would be visible from the front.

Tip:  Use sandpaper or an emery board to scuff up the surface on the back of the brooch prior to applying the glue. (Afterwards, wash your hands and clean up all metal particles.)

Step Five

Before the glue cools, position the brooch on your mounting board and press down to adhere.

Step Six

Remove the liner to expose the adhesive side of the bottom pad.  Center your decorated mounting board over the bottom pad and press down to adhere.

Step Seven

Center the bottom pad over the base of the paperweight and press into place.

Your Finished!

This paperweight would look fabulous on any desk.  If you'd like to bring a little sparkle to your desk at work, this is a terrific project for you to consider.
